As with every other living organism, the historic square in downtown Clinton has passed through several phases and transformations. And just like any other species, where only the strongest and more willing ones adapt and survive, the square has paid its toll to progress, live and evolve.
Clinton resident David Maggi composed this poem about the resiliency of the town square for this photographic essay:
on the square
tired horses were tied
to hitching post,
and business went on.
early autos clanged and banged
their way around the square
in search of muddy parking spaces,
as business went on.
on the courthouse lawn
a prayer peace
was share by all
when the world was at war,
then business went on.
good times rolled on
and better times followed,
the square was thriving,
so business went on.
tragedy stung us twice,
as buildings so familiar
brought death to the heart
of our city,
but soon business went on.
and today with it's
bright september sun
shinning hope and happiness,
we stroll the square,
and business goes on.***
A man reads the Clinton Democrat as he waits to get his hair cut at the Barbery Center. "in small town like Clinton, everyone knows what everyone else is doing, they just read the newspaper to see who got caught," said a local resident.
