Story Summary

A mile-long pedestrian thoroughfare, Denver's 16th Street Mall is a popular tourist destination. Designed by architect I.M. Pei, the mall links several downtown neighborhoods and runs from the city's transit center on the east to Union Station on the west. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, it was a co-mingling of men in sport coats and cowboy hats, office workers, and conventioneers sporting giant name badges. But with convention halls and skyscrapers mostly empty, the mall now features those who never left: bored teenagers, homeless people and some tourists and locals. Pointing toward the mall’s distant ending point, a local said, “It keeps goin’.”
