Capri Djatiasmoro, 69, an open water swimmer and self-described mermaid treks out to the shore as often as possible. She is most happy and energized in the water. During the social distancing of Covid-19, she finds her swimming community and the beach, which provides a lot of space to social distance, a great way to spend her time. Being aware of, and adapting to the changing ocean conditions, has transferred over to her life. As she says: "To be ready for anything life has to offer.".
The ocean is her haven and solace, feeding her physically, emotionally, and spiritually. As it gets colder in the winter months ahead, she will transition some of her long-distance training swims into indoor pools -- but she's not one to shy away from extreme cold water swimming, having braved terribly cold ice swims in Patagonia and Siberia. "I always feel fantastic after a swim, it's just so healthy. Swimmers understand this, my fellow mermaids and merman, we all have the ocean in common. I love it. Just Keep Swimming."
