Story Summary

Four generations of women, two grandmothers living with their granddaughters, work together to raise 9-year-old Adilyn Monroe between their homes in Excelsior Manor Mobile Home Park.

“It’s nice to have family around because it’s not about you, it’s about us,” says Mary Ann, 55, who has been the guardian for granddaughter Adilyn for the past seven years in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Mary Ann’s mother, Sharon, 73, lives around the corner at the mobile home park. Her home is the gathering place for the family. Two months ago Adilyn’s mother, Sherie, 38, went to the emergency room in Kansas City where she was diagnosed with kidney, liver and heart failure. She was given a two to four month life expectancy due to her previous methamphetamine addiction. After several years of estrangement, Sherie moved in with her grandmother, Sharon, who welcomed her into her home. “I wasn’t going to let her die on the streets when there was something I could do about it,” Mary Ann states. The three women have put aside their differences to give Adilyn an opportunity to make memories with her mother.
