George
Olson earned his merit badge for photography at the age of 13, but it took
the encouragement of the town camera shop owner's son to really awaken his
interest. As soon as he saw his first print appear in the developer, he
was hooked. After working on his high school and college yearbooks, he moved
on to work for the Topeka Capital-Journal and the Kansas City Star. In 1977
he moved to San Francisco and worked as a freelancer for many publications,
including National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian
and the New York Times. He also served as a freelance picture editor for
the San Francisco Examiner, and many of the Day in the Life. He also did
picture editing for many other book projects, including Christmas in America,
Jews in America, Baseball in America, One Earth, and Planet Vegas. He has
served on the faculty of the Missouri Photo Workshop, Photography on the
Summit, and the Jackson Hole Workshop . He has also taught Photojournalism
as an extension course for the University of California, Berkeley. He has
worked at Sunset Magazine since 1995, and currently serves as their Travel
Picture Editor. |
